CETENA S.p.A. (CETENA), Italy

Profile

CETENA is a company of research and consultancy in the naval field. Its main objectives are the development of applied ship research and of methods and technologies for the design, construction and operation of the ship. National research activities are carried out with the support of the Ministry for Transport and of the Ministries for Research and Technological Innovation.
CETENA is headquartered in Genoa, with offices in Trieste, Muggiano, Castellammare di Stabia (Naples), Palermo and Riva Trigoso. The main activities of the Structures and Materials department are structural strength analysis, non-linear analysis / structural collapse, thermo mechanical analysis, hydro elastic analysis, fatigue analysis, blast and shock analysis and simulation of composite and elastomeric materials. Internationally, CETENA participates in European Research Projects and is a member of important consortia such as ISSC (International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress).

Role in the project

EUCLID RTP 3.21 "Survivability, Durability and Performance of Naval Composite structures"(2000-2004) - European Research and Technology Project, was aimed at improving the technological basis for an even more extensive use of composite materials on naval vessels. This project was coordinated by DNV and developed with the contribution of partners in six countries. CETENA performed static, shock, dynamic, blast and thermo-mechanical analyses on composite structures characterised by high non-linearities.

BONDSHIP - "Bonding of lightweight materials for cost effective production of high speed craft and passenger ships" (2000-2003) was a major European initiative to introduce adhesive bonding into ship building, had 13 partners of 7 countries. The project was aimed at providing general requirements to ensure the reliability and safety of bonded structural joints in ships. CETENA performed numerical simulations of mechanical tests and several onboard application cases of bonded structures.

SHIPMATES - "SHIPrepair to MAintain Transport which is Environmentally Sustainable"(2000-2005) - European Research and Technology Project, was coordinated by the SSA, was developed with the contribution of shipyards, universities and research centres. The main objective of the project was to certify that the EU ship repair industry is able to improve its share of the world market and the lifecycle quality of the EU fleet, and to reduce pollution. CETENA developed the state of the art, technological gaps and needs analyses in ship repair industry.

TRASPORTI - "Soluzioni integrate per la progettazione e realizzazione di elementi in composito"(2006 - 2009) is coordinated by IMAST, the Italian technological district on composite materials, and is aimed at developing real and virtual tools for the design and manufacture of composite components for automotive and ship applications. CETENA has selected new materials and performed simulations to assess: fire resistance, acoustical insulation, mechanical and thermo-mechanical behaviour and bullet resistance of composite structures.
